UN assigns Claudio Cordone as deputy special envoy for Syria
Cordone brings 40 years of experience in international relations, human rights, and humanitarian law. Since 2022, he has served as deputy special representative for political affairs and electoral assistance with the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).
Previously, he was director of UNRWA in Lebanon (2017–2022), briefly acting as resident and humanitarian coordinator, and held senior roles with the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), including director of the Human Rights, Transitional Justice and Rule of Law Division.
Earlier in his career, Cordone worked with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Libya and served as chief of the Human Rights Office with the UN Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina (UNMIBH) from 1997 to 1998.
His appointment signals continuity in the UN’s engagement with Syria’s transitional process amid ongoing regional stabilization efforts.
